The ‘Girls in Green’ were 260 evacuees from the Central Foundation Girls’ School in the East End of London, who arrived by train in Ely on the 1st September 1939 with their teacher. They did not know, if war was declared, If they would be staying in this strange city for days, weeks or months. In the event some stayed for four years making Ely their second home.
