The Story of the Evacuation in 1939 of the Jews’ Free School to Ely
On the 1st September 1939 among the hundreds of arriving evacuees in Ely, from the East End of London was a special group of Jewish boys with the Jews’ Free School. Many of them spoke little English and they had been rescued from almost certain death in Europe by travelling on the Kindertransport. This is the moving story of how Dr Bernstein, his dedidcated staff, and the people of Ely made new lives for them here.
