Christine Pownall aroused interest some years ago by taking groups of people, who wanted to know more of Ely’s history, on a fascinating walking tour of the small area of Ely either side of Silver Street: this area had been the home of the Ely Militia from 1852 to 1908. She was eventually persuaded to allow the Ely Society to publish her accounts of Tales of The Militia In Ely
