The later part of the 18th century saw huge growth in national companies and brand names, mainly due to the increased mechanisation in production and the expansion of the railway network which allowed for the wider distribution of products.  Companies expanded as the demand for their products grew and they were able to increase their production.  Soft Fruit Preserving Companies were able to produce jams and preserves and transport them to the major towns and cities and many of todays popular brands started production during this time such as Robinson, Chivers, Wilkins and Hartleys. Elys businessmen saw the opportunity to establish a company in Ely in the business of fruit production.

On Wednesday 12th February 2025 Oliver Cromwell’s House will be closed to General Admissions until 12.30pm due to pre-booked Guided Tours.

 

Ely’s Tourist Information Centre and Gift Shop will remain open from 11am until 4 pm.
