Step into the shadows of Ely and uncover a darker chapter of the city’s past…

On Cloak of Fear: Witchcraft in Ely, your guide will lead you through centuries of superstition, suspicion and fear, exploring the beliefs that once surrounded witchcraft, magic and the supernatural.

Discover tales of accusations and persecution, charms and curses, cunning folk, strange beliefs and supposed encounters with the unexplained, all set against the atmospheric streets of historic Ely.

Who was feared as a witch? What could make a neighbour suddenly fall under suspicion? And when misfortune struck, just how easily could the finger of accusation be pointed?

But there’s a reward waiting for those who survive the tour…

Our journey ends at Griddle Bar and Meathouse, where you’ll be welcomed in from the darkness to enjoy a specially prepared Witches’ Brew and raise a glass to Ely’s more mysterious past.

History, folklore, witchcraft and a little liquid magic – all in one bewitching evening.
