For many centuries the fame of Hereward the Wake was sung in the streets and over glowing hearths. Through the course of time historical facts inevitable became enmeshed with fiction and the Fens’ and national hero and patriot increasingly portrayed from a tinted pedestal of mythology.
Much of this was unwittingly the doing of eminent Victorian authors, Charles Kingsley, a champion of the Fens, and William MacFarlane, both of whom produced magnificent portraits of the Fen hero in popular romantic novels entitled The Camp of Refuge.
